Lornoxicam is a highly potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the oxicam class with powerful analgesic and antipyretic properties. It works by non-selectively inhibiting cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes, which suppresses prostaglandin synthesis and dampens the inflammatory cascade. Notably, lornoxicam has a short elimination half-life of approximately 3 to 5 hours, combining rapid-onset analgesic efficacy with an improved gastrointestinal safety profile compared to longer-acting oxicams. Clinically, lornoxicam is indicated for the acute management of mild-to-moderate pain, including post-operative pain, dental pain, and acute sciatica. It is also indicated for the symptomatic treatment of pain and inflammation in chronic musculoskeletal disorders, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The standard adult dosage ranges from 8mg to 16mg daily given in divided doses, with a maximum daily cap of 16mg. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water before meals. It is strictly contraindicated in patients with active peptic ulceration, severe renal or hepatic impairment, severe heart failure, and during the third trimester of pregnancy. Common adverse effects include dyspepsia, abdominal pain, nausea, dizziness, and headache.
