Valam 10mg/160mg is a dual-combination antihypertensive medication formulated with Amlodipine Besylate (10mg) and Valsartan (160mg). It is prescribed for the treatment of essential hypertension in patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled on single-agent therapy, or as an initial treatment when multiple agents are required to reach target blood pressure goals.The drug operates through two complementary mechanisms to reduce arterial resistance. Amlodipine, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker (CCB), inhibits calcium entry into vascular smooth muscle cells, promoting peripheral vasodilatation. Valsartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the $AT_1$ receptor, preventing vasoconstriction and aldosterone-mediated sodium retention. Together, they effectively lower systemic vascular resistance and blood pressure, reducing the risk of fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular events, such as stroke and myocardial infarction.The recommended administration is one tablet taken orally once daily with water, with or without food. Common side effects include peripheral edema, dizziness, fatigue, headache, and flushing. It is contraindicated during pregnancy due to the risk of fetal harm associated with ARBs.
