Kelfer 500 mg capsule contains Deferiprone, an oral iron-chelating agent used to treat iron overload in patients who receive repeated blood transfusions, such as those with Thalassemia. Excess iron can accumulate in vital organs like the liver, heart, and endocrine glands, leading to serious complications. Kelfer works by binding to free iron in the bloodstream and tissues, forming a complex that is excreted primarily through urine, which may appear reddish-brown during treatment. The dosage is usually based on body weight and is taken two to three times daily, with or without food, as directed by a physician. Regular monitoring of blood counts is essential because the medicine can reduce white blood cell levels, increasing infection risk. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and joint discomfort. Patients with liver or kidney problems should use it cautiously.
