Caspofungin is an antifungal medicine belonging to the echinocandin class, used to treat serious and invasive fungal infections. It is commonly prescribed for invasive candidiasis (including candidemia), esophageal candidiasis, and invasive aspergillosis in patients who are refractory to or intolerant of other antifungal therapies such as amphotericin B or azoles. Caspofungin works by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for producing beta-(1,3)-D-glucan, an essential structural component of the fungal cell wall. Without this component, the fungal cell wall weakens, leading to cell rupture and death, helping control the infection. The 50 mg injection is supplied as a sterile lyophilized powder that must be reconstituted and diluted before intravenous infusion. It is administered only in hospital or clinical settings by trained healthcare professionals. Treatment typically begins with a loading dose of 70 mg on the first day, followed by a maintenance dose of 50 mg daily.
