Bovine Lipid Extract Surfactant is a natural surfactant replacement medicine used primarily for the prevention and treatment of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature infants. It is derived from bovine lung extract and contains phospholipids and surfactant-associated proteins that help reduce surface tension within the lungs. Premature babies often have insufficient natural surfactant, causing the tiny air sacs in the lungs to collapse and making breathing difficult. Administration of bovine lipid extract surfactant helps keep the air sacs open, improves lung expansion, and enhances oxygen exchange. The medication is supplied as a sterile suspension and is administered directly into the lungs through an endotracheal tube by trained healthcare professionals in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Treatment is usually given shortly after birth and may be repeated depending on the infant’s condition and oxygen requirements. Common side effects include temporary oxygen desaturation, slow heart rate, airway obstruction, and changes in blood pressure during administration.
