Axcin 500mg Tablets are an oral, broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibacterial formulation containing ciprofloxacin (as hydrochloride). It exerts a rapid bactericidal effect by targeting and inhibiting essential bacterial enzymes: DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV. These enzymes are vital for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. By disrupting these mechanisms, Axcin causes irreversible double-stranded DNA breaks, leading to bacterial cell death. It demonstrates high activity against a wide range of Gram-negative pathogens, along with select Gram-positive organisms. Clinically, Axcin 500mg is indicated for treating moderate-to-severe systemic bacterial infections. Primary indications include complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), acute pyelonephritis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, severe lower respiratory tract infections (including nosocomial pneumonia), bone and joint infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections (in combination with metronidazole), and infectious diarrhea. The standard adult dosage is 500mg administered every 12 hours, though it can be escalated based on infection severity. Tablets must be swallowed whole with fluids and can be taken independently of meals, but never with dairy or calcium-fortified juices alone. It is strictly contraindicated in patients with fluoroquinolone hypersensitivity and those concurrently taking tizanidine. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia, headache, and transient skin rash.
