Axcin 250mg Tablets are an oral, broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibacterial formulation containing ciprofloxacin (as hydrochloride). It exerts a rapid bactericidal effect by targeting and inhibiting essential bacterial enzymes: DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV. These enzymes are vital for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. By disrupting these mechanisms, Axcin causes irreversible double-stranded DNA breaks, leading to bacterial cell death. It demonstrates high activity against a wide range of Gram-negative pathogens, along with select Gram-positive organisms. Clinically, Axcin 250mg is indicated for treating mild-to-moderate systemic bacterial infections. These include uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), acute uncomplicated cystitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, lower respiratory tract infections, acute sinusoidal exacerbations, skin structure infections, bone and joint infections, and infectious diarrhea. The standard adult dosage is 250mg administered every 12 hours, though it can be escalated based on infection severity. Tablets must be swallowed whole with fluids and can be taken independently of meals, but never with dairy or calcium-fortified juices alone. It is strictly contraindicated in patients with fluoroquinolone hypersensitivity and those concurrently taking tizanidine. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia, headache, and transient skin rash.
